Residence Gallery Salzburg

Unique paintings from the 16th to 20th centuries: When the residence gallery opened in 1923 the museum didn’t have a single work of art. Today this Salzburg gallery has a unique collection and a visit is really worthwhile!
In the heart of the Salzburg old town, named a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1997, you will find the Residence Gallery. After it was re-opened in 1952 the focus at this gallery of paintings moved to paintings of the 16th to 20th centuries. One exhibition is the Czernin collection, formerly in Vienna, which remains one of the most important collections of paintings at the gallery at the Residence in Salzburg.

Gallery in Salzburg: Collection at the Old Residence

Why is the Residence Gallery so popular with lovers of art? Because of the focal points of its collections! You can admire Dutch painting from the 17th century, the Italian, French and Austrian baroque painting of the 17th and 18th centuries and Austrian painting of the 19th century. There are also changing special exhibitions at the Residence in Salzburg. This is how an exciting symbiosis is created between historical and contemporary art.

Just the magnificent rooms of the Residence are worth a visit. It was once the home of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg. And today many details in this Salzburg gallery still tell of the wealth of the Prince Archbishops. The rooms in the current Residence Gallery were already used to exhibit the Archbishop’s collection of paintings under Archbishop Hieronymus Graf Colloredo.
