Hohensalzburg Fortress

Majestic landmark of the city

The imposing fortress Hohensalzburg was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard and extended by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. Today, it is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. Originally built as a military fortress and temporary residence of the archbishops, the medieval castle later served as a barracks and prison. Even Archbishop Dietrich was held for five years in the dark dungeons until his death. You can learn more about the stories of the fortress Hohensalzburg at one of the guided tours.

High above the rooftops of Salzburg

The Hohensalzburg fortress can be easily reached from the fortress lane by a cable railway. Sporty guests can reach the fortress on foot, the only ten-minute, but steep walk to the fortress is worthwhile. The breathtaking view offered by the fortress will inspire you. As far as Bavaria, the archbishops could see from this fortress, perhaps one of the many reasons why the fortress of Hohensalzburg could never be taken by enemies.
