Kärntnerstraße in Vienna

Kärntnerstraße is one of the most well known streets in the centre of Vienna and is a paradise for shopping tours in Vienna. It begins at Karlsplatz and leads past the state opera to Stephansplatz with its impressive symbol of Vienna, the Stephansdom.

In 1974 the well known Kärntner Straße between the state opera and Stephansplatz was turned into a pedestrian district by the architects Wilhelm Holzbauer and Wolfgang Windbrechtinger. This central shopping street has many boutiques and shops with exclusive products as well as renowned fashion chains. The glass house J. & L. Lobmeyer was established in 1823 and is still located on Kärntnerstraße. The wide range of shops is supplemented by typical Viennese coffe houses.

A very special coffee house is located in one of the small side roads off Kärntnerstrasse. This is often praised Café Hawelka. It was founded in 1936 by Leopold and Josefine Hawelka and has been very popular ever since. The famous Buchteln are a culinary highlight.
