Sightseeing along the subway in Vienna – U2

Our two Vienna hotels IMLAUER Vienna and Nestroy Vienna are each only a 3 minutes’ walk from two subway lines. This gives you an excellent connection to the city and you will get quickly and comfortably to the sights of the city. We already showed you, which attractions you can reach with the subway U1. This time we introduce to you the subway line U2 (purple line). Starting at the station “Taborstraße”, you will find numerous sights of Vienna in the driving direction of “Karlsplatz” as well as in the driving direction of “Aspernstraße” / “Seestadt”.

Direction Karlsplatz – station Schottentor

When you enter the U2 subway in the station “Taborstraße” and head towards “Karlsplatz”, you will reach the city center and thus a large number of sights. Get off at the second stop “Schottentor” and you will come directly to the main building of the University of Vienna. The university was opened in 1877, after the old university building near the Stubenring had become too small.
A must see at this sop is also the church “Votivkirche”, Vienna’s second highest church, which was likewise built in the second half of the 19th century, but in Gothic style.
At station “Schottentor”, you can also change to the tram line “38”, which takes you to Grinzing to the Heurigen and continue by bus “38A” up to the Kahlenberg.

Direction Karlsplatz – station Rathaus

If you continue with the U2, you will reach the station “Rathaus”, directly at the Vienna city hall and the city hall park. This is where the famous music film festival takes place, which should not be missed in the warm summer evenings. Opposite the city hall stands the Vienna Burgtheater, which is worthwhile both for a visit as part of a guided tour as well as for a performance.

Direction Karlsplatz – station Volkstheater

At the next station “Volkstheater” you will find at the exit to the Ringstraße the Austrian Parliament on the one side and the Natural History Museum on the other side. The second exit leads you directly to the Vokstheater and the beginning of the Museumsquartier, where the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art await you.
From this exit, you can reach the “Spittelberg” district in just a few minutes, with small old alleyways, which during Christmas time lure with a beautiful Christmas market.

Direction Karlsplatz – station Museumsquartier

One more stop is the other end of the Museumsquartier. Here starts the street “Mariahilferstraße”, probably the largest shopping street in Vienna after the city center.
From here, you can also reach the Museum of fine arts Vienna (“Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien”) in a few minutes, which should not be missed. A wonderful collection of paintings, the newly opened collection of the “Kunstkammer” and an Egyptian section, ranks the house among the most interesting museums in the world.

Direction Karlsplatz – station Karlsplatz

With the next station, you reach the end station “Karlsplatz”, with the church “Karlskirche”, a baroque jewel of the Austrian architectural history. Next to it, you will find the Vienna History Museum and the Künstlerhaus Vienna, which again and again shows interesting performances.
The Technical University of Vienna and the Kunsthalle are located right at the exit of the station. A few minutes further you will also find the famous Viennese Naschmarkt with fruits, vegetables, spices, fish and much more.

Direction Aspernstraße / Seestadt – station Praterstern

If you take the subway line U2 in the opposite direction “Aspernstraße / Seestadt” at our starting station “Taborstraße”, you first reach the station “Praterstern”. Here you will come directly to the well-known Viennese Prater, a large amusement park that also houses the Giant Ferry Wheel of Vienna.

Direction Aspernstraße / Seestadt – Station Messe-Prater

The Messe Wien exhibition & congress center can be reached easily and quickly. As a guest of our hotels, you have direct access to the two most important exhibition centers in Vienna with the two underground lines U1 (Austria Center Vienna) and U2 (Messe Wien).
Also at this stop, you will find the University of Economics Vienna, which has been here since 2004. International architects, including Zaha Hadid, have designed the individual buildings of the University of Economics and thus made them an architecturally interesting sight.

Direction Aspernstraße / Seestadt – station Krieau

From the station “Krieau” you reach the other end of the university campus. In addition, you have access to the Viennese harness racing track, which has been in operation since 1878.

Direction Aspernstraße / Seestadt – Station Stadion

The next stop “Stadion” will take you to the Ernst Happel Stadium, Austria’s largest soccer stadium, which holds more than 50,000 visitors.

Direction Aspernstraße / Seestadt – station Donaustadtbrücke

Whether you are in Vienna for business or pleasure, the city is excellent with public transport. If you do not want to drive into the city with your car at this station, you have the opportunity to use one of the Park & Ride facilities in Vienna. In 6 stops and about 10 minutes, you will reach our two hotels IMLAUER Vienna and Nestroy Vienna very easily and comfortably.
