The Graben: Deluxe shopping in Vienna

A shopping experience of superlatives

The Graben in Vienna’s city center, together with the Kohlmarkt, is considered to be Vienna’s most elegant and exquisite shopping street and pedestrian mile. Here are the finest boutiques and former imperial suppliers.
When shopping in the luxury shopping street, you should bring some time and money. Not only the extensive range of boutiques, stores and shops are impressive, but also the beautiful facades of the houses on the Graben are unique.

Shopping and strolling along the Graben

Due to its proximity to the Vienna imperial palace, the “Hofburg”, the Graben was already a popular shopping street in Vienna during the Habsburg monarchy. Even today, there are some of the then imperial court suppliers at the Graben, among them the jeweler Heldwein, the porcelain house Denk as well as the fashion shop Knize. Today, the Graben owes its excellent reputation to the numerous well-known brand companies that have settled here.

History and tradition at the Graben

Shopping in a historic setting, surrounded by impressive sights, at the Graben it is possible. In the middle of the square stands the baroque plague column, erected by Emperor Leopold I in 1679 to commemorate the plague. A curious tip for insiders: The Art Nouveau toilet designed by Adolf Loos is worth a visit.
The Graben was owed to the English in the widest sense, for it was only with the high sum of the ransom which Vienna had received for the extradition of the kidnapped King Richard I, also called Lionheart, that this boulevard could be built.

Easy accessibility

Decide for a ride with the Fiaker, a traditional horse carriage, and have fun anecdotes tell you about the Graben before you continue your shopping trip in Kärntner Straße.
From our two Viennese Hotels, Hotel IMLAUER Vienna and Hotel Nestroy Vienna, you can reach the Graben quickly and easily by underground line U1. From our hotels, it is a 3-minute walk to the subway station “Nestroyplatz”, where you ascend the subway in the direction “Raumannplatz” and go only two stations.
