Wiener Sängerknaben

Soft boys’ voices to delight the heart in Vienna
The Wiener Sängerknaben choir has been thrilling the public in Vienna since 1498. Today around 100 active members aged between 10 and 14 sing with the Wiener Sängerknaben.

The Wiener Sängerknaben are split into four choirs. Besides their international tours they also hold concerts and performances in Vienna and all around Austria. Sound and film recordings often interrupt the daily routine of these teens, who must of course also attend school, like all children in Austria.

The Wiener Sängerknaben – an institution with tradition in Vienna

In 1498 Kaiser Maximilian I. moved his court from Innsbruck to Vienna. He insisted that there should be six young boys among the court musicians. This was the foundation stone for the institution Wiener Sängerknaben and the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle. Until 1918 the Wiener Sängerknaben only sang for the court, at masses or at private parties and on state occasions. The famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played with the Wiener Sängerknaben, as did Heinrich Isaac, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Christoph Willibald Gluck. Jacobus Gallus and Franz Schubert were active members of the Wiener Sängerknaben themselves.

The four choirs of the Wiener Sängerknaben

The Wiener Sängerknaben choir is one of the oldest boys’ choirs that is not associated with a church or college. This traditional boys’ choir is split into four. They carry the names of famous composers who are closely associated with the history of the Wiener Sängerknaben: Anton Bruckner, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. The duties of the Wiener Sängerknaben today include singing masses at the Wiener Hofburgkapelle, official performances at state occasions, concerts in Vienna, performances at the Vienna State Opera and the Volksoper and concert tours. The institution places great emphasis on not over-taxing the young boys and leaving enough time for their schooling.
