Winter city break: Visit to the Christmas market in Vienna

Advent and New Year in the capital city of Austria

A holiday in the imperial city is particularly wonderful when advent begins in Vienna. Visit Vienna’s Christmas markets and look forward to the most reflective time of the year.

Christmas and New Year in Vienna are particularly charming; a casual stroll through the often snowy inner city with its Christmas decoration is truly romantic.

Vienna Christmas Markets

The Vienna Christmas Market at the City Hall Square has more than 700 years of tradition: it is the largest Christmas Market and takes place from November 17 to December 26, 2017 in front of the city hall. The city hall is transformed into an enormous advent calendar for this time.

The Old Viennese Christmas Market on the Freyung is particularly beautiful. You can admire the longest crib in Austria and get caught up in the atmosphere of advent

The Christmas Market in front of the historic Palace of Schönbrunn is also an absolute highlight. Combine your visit to the Schönbrunn Christmas Market in Vienna with a Christmas walk through the extensive park. The warming mulled wine from one of the many stands tastes even better after that walk.

Christmas magic all over the city

As different as Vienna’s Christmas Markets are, they do have one thing in common: everywhere you go it smells of chestnuts, punch and mulled wine, roast almonds and baked apples, simply irresistible! And here you will find wonderful opportunities to buy small and big gifts for Christmas. Discover the wintery Vienna in its Christmas glow and enjoy the 5th season in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

New Year in Vienna

In time for New Year the center of Vienna is transformed into one big party venue. Just as popular as the young party scene, which has its high point every year at New Year, is the globally famous New Year’s Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna Philharmonic has been presenting an attractive program from the wide repertoire of the Strauß dynasty and his contemporaries every year for decades now.
