Interest in cross-country skiing has increased significantly in recent years, leading to a large selection of classic and skating trails. While you make your rounds at a steady pace, you can enjoy wonderful natural panoramas and adjust your speed to suit your own comfort level.
A paradise for cross-country skiers can be found in the cross-country village of Faistenau and Hintersee, just half an hour’s drive from Salzburg. 6 trails with a length between 2 and 20 kilometers can be skied here.
The appropriate cross-country skiing equipment can be hired from various local stores. Courses are also offered.
The ice skating trail on the Gaisberg is even closer. You can reach it by car in approx. 15 minutes. The trail is located on a high plateau and is not difficult to navigate. Depending on the snow conditions, the trail is between 3 and 5 kilometers long.
In good snow conditions, cross-country skiing is also possible directly in the city. For example at Hellbrunn Palace or in Leopoldskron.

There are several opportunities for guided snowshoe hikes around Salzburg, which not only provide exercise in the fresh air and fitness, but also offer wonderful panoramas and nature experiences.
A special highlight is a snowshoe hike by moonlight. The bright moon creates interesting light and shadow effects, the snow glistens under your feet – an extraordinary experience for all nature lovers and romantics.

Ice skating
Ice skating in a historic setting? This is also possible in Salzburg. From November to the beginning of January, a large ice rink is created every year on Mozartplatz. Here you can skate your laps and enjoy the historic Salzburg with a view of the cathedral, fortress and the Salzburg Christmas market. Equipment is available to hire.
The Volksgarten ice arena is open all winter with an indoor and an outdoor area. You can also hire skates here on site.
With suitable temperatures and an appropriate layer of ice, ice skating on the Leopoldskroner Weiher is a special natural experience.
