Between lakes, forests and meadows

A hike is the perfect way to relax your mind and recharge your batteries in the midst of beautiful nature. The

6-lake hike

on the Tauplitzalm offers a beautiful landscape of lakes, meadows and forests and fascinating panoramic views.

The hiking trails of the 6-lake hike are family-friendly and can be customized in length. The entire hike takes around 5 hours. Smaller stages are possible from as little as one hour.

Dreamlike landscapes

We start our hike from the mountain station of the Tauplitz cable car. First head west towards Krallersee, a moorland lake surrounded by green slopes and small woods. With an area of 0.75 hectares, Lake Kraller is one of the smaller lakes and can therefore be easily circumnavigated.

Continue eastwards to the large lake. With an area of 6.2 ha and a depth of up to 40 m, it lives up to its name. A leisurely hiking trail leads around the large lake. The lake is surrounded by green spaces and conifers and is an ideal place to take a short break.

Five minutes north of the large lake is the Märchensee. It is the smallest of the six lakes, but also the most romantic with its beautiful color and fairytale surroundings.

Wonderful views far and near

After the Märchensee lake, the hike continues eastwards to the Tauplitzsee lake. It is another moorland lake and slightly twice the size of the fairytale lake. It is somewhat more open than the other lakes and is nestled between flowering alpine meadows.

Continue east to the Steirersee lake. At 12.5 hectares, it is twice the size of the large lake and has a depth of up to 30 meters. It is beautifully nestled between wooded mountain hills and offers a panoramic view not to be missed from the “Steirersee-Bankerl”. From here you can see the 2,028 m high Sturzhahn, which was first climbed by mountaineering and Tibet legend Heinrich Harrer.

Further east you come to Lake Schwarzensee, which is particularly impressive with its crystal-clear water. It has an area of 5.3 hectares and is deeply embedded in the partly steep mountain slopes.

It is the last of the 5 lakes on the Tauplitzalm and from here you head back west to the mountain station of the Tauplitzbahn.
