Dreamlike landscapes
We start our hike from the mountain station of the Tauplitz cable car. First we head west towards Krallersee, a moorland lake surrounded by green slopes and small woods. With an area of 0.75 hectares, the Krallersee is one of the smaller lakes and can therefore be easily circumnavigated.
Continue east to the large lake. With an area of 6.2 hectares and a depth of up to 40 m, it lives up to its name. A pleasant hiking trail leads around the lake. The lake is surrounded by green areas and conifers and is an ideal place to take a short break.
Five minutes north of the large lake is the fairytale lake. It is the smallest of the six lakes, but with its beautiful color and fairytale surroundings, it is also the most romantic.
Wonderful views far and near
After the Märchensee, the hike continues eastwards to the Tauplitzsee. It is another moorland lake and slightly twice the size of the Märchensee. It is a little more open than the other lakes and is nestled between flowering alpine meadows.
Continue east to the Steirersee lake. At 12.5 hectares, it is twice as large as the large lake and has a depth of up to 30 meters. It is beautifully nestled between wooded mountain hills and offers a panoramic view not to be missed from the “Steirersee-Bankerl”. From here you can clearly see the 2,028 m high Sturzhahn, which was first climbed by mountaineering and Tibet legend Heinrich Harrer.
Further east you come to the Schwarzensee, which is particularly impressive with its crystal-clear water. It covers an area of 5.3 hectares and is deeply embedded in the steep mountain slopes.
It is the last of the 5 lakes on the Tauplitzalm and from here you head back west to the mountain station of the Tauplitzbahn.
