The Donnersbach Valley near Irdning captivates visitors with its unspoiled nature, living traditions, and numerous cultural treasures. A truly special destination is the Planneralm Mountain Pine Distillery —a unique natural apothecary at about 1,600 meters above sea level, where you can experience the power of the local mountains in a truly impressive way.
At the end of the picturesque Donnersbach Valley, the Planneralm—Styria’s highest mountain village—awaits you. From the IMLAUER Hotel Schloss Pichlarn , you can reach this special destination in about 30 minutes by car. The route takes you through Irdning, along the idyllic Donnersbach Valley, and finally up a mountain road about 12 kilometers long to the Planneralm.
The Latschen Distillery
For over 60 years, the traditional craft of producing mountain pine oil has been practiced at the Planneralm. Using time-honored recipes, pure organic mountain pine oil is extracted from the freshly harvested young shoots of the mountain pine (Krummholz pine). Thanks to its characteristic fresh, resinous scent and its valuable active ingredients, mountain pine oil has been valued in naturopathy for centuries.
The spicy scent of mountain pine evokes a walk through a sun-drenched mountain forest. This precious oil has been prized for generations for its soothing properties: It can pleasantly refresh the respiratory tract, relax tense muscles after a hike, and provide new energy with its invigorating aroma. This makes mountain pine oil a piece of alpine nature that pampers both the body and the senses.

Experience Traditional Craftsmanship Up Close
At the Planneralm Mountain Pine Distillery, you can experience the production of mountain pine oil up close. The demonstration distillery and informative guided tours offer fascinating insights into traditional production methods. In the adjacent museum, you’ll learn interesting facts about the extraction of essential oil—both then and now.

A Day at the Planneralm
A visit to the Latschen distillery can be wonderfully combined with other mountain experiences. A herbal nature trail on the Planneralm invites you to learn more about the alpine flora. On this approximately 2-km loop trail, you’ll discover interesting facts about the local plant life and enjoy magnificent panoramic views.

Duration: approx. 1 hour walking time
Ascent: approx. 100 meters in elevation
If you have a little more stamina left, you should definitely plan a visit to Plannersee. This small mountain lake is beautifully situated and offers magnificent panoramic views, as well as plenty of open space and tranquility to catch your breath, slow down, and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
