THE PLACE TO CELEBRATE

ADVENT IN VIENNA – A MAGICAL TIME

When the days get shorter and the city is wrapped in warm light, Vienna shows its most beautiful side: Advent transforms the Danube metropolis into a sparkling winter fairy tale.

The smell of punch, chestnuts and gingerbread is everywhere, the streets glow with sparkling lights and Christmas markets on every corner invite you to linger and stroll around.

Experience Viennese Advent flair

Vienna’s old town is a sea of lights in the run-up to Christmas. The magnificently decorated Kärntner Straße, Graben and Rotenturmstraße in particular radiate a festive atmosphere.

A stroll through the historic center, past festively decorated shop windows and shining facades, is simply a must at this time of year.

Visitors can also experience an atmospheric ambience around St. Stephen’s Cathedral – a unique combination of Viennese charm, history and Advent magic.

The most beautiful Christmas markets in Vienna

Vienna is famous for its traditional Advent markets, which are among the most beautiful in Europe. Each market has its own charm – from classic and romantic to modern and hip:

  • Christmas market on RathausplatzThe most famous and largest Advent market in the city attracts visitors with a glittering Christmas tree, colorfully decorated trees and many stalls with Christmas decorations, culinary delights and wonderfully fragrant punch.

  • Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace

An imperial experience with arts and crafts, music and culinary delights in a unique setting in the large courtyard in front of Schönbrunn Palace. The unique ambience and carefully selected stalls make this Advent market a very special experience.

  • Christmas village on the campus of the University of Vienna

Popular with locals – cozy, atmospheric and full of charm in a historic setting that houses part of the University of Vienna. The large inner courtyard with lots of trees and quiet location is also ideal for an afternoon visit.

  • Advent market on Stephansplatz

Right in the heart of the city, surrounded by historic facades and twinkling lights, the Advent market is located right next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral. A great atmosphere that unfolds its very special charm in the evening.

  • Christmas market on Spittelberg

Romantic, winding alleyways in the historic 7th district – perfect for anyone looking for something special.

  • Christmas market Am HofThis Christmas market is also located in the heart of the old town and is particularly impressive due to its focus on craftsmanship and culinary delights.

Winter walks and Viennese coziness

Anyone experiencing Advent in Vienna should take time for a stroll through the wintry parks and streets. A walk through the Volksgarten and Burggarten, where the festively illuminated Hofburg is reflected in the glittering lights, is particularly beautiful. A walk through the Prater also has its very own magic at this time of year.

And when it gets cold outside, the traditional Viennese coffee houses beckon with warmth and coziness. A Melange, a slice of apple strudel or Sachertorte – and the world stands still for a moment.
