THE PLACE TO CELEBRATE

CHRISTMAS SALZBURG

Salzburg is a city full of magic, history and a wonderful atmosphere. During Advent and Christmas, however, our city takes on a special magic that captivates every visitor: glittering lights, the fine aromas of gingerbread and Christmas baking and white snow caps on the rooftops.

Christmas in Salzburg means being amazed, experiencing, enjoying and being enchanted. We show you the most beautiful Christmas sights in the city.

Salzburg Christmas Market

Who doesn’t love the lovingly designed Christmas markets with their colorful huts and twinkling lights. This is where you can often find the best Christmas presents. Whether it’s handicrafts, arts and crafts, Christmas decorations or culinary delights to give as gifts – the choice is huge and varied.

The history of the Salzburg Christmas Market dates back to the 17th century. The location is also unique. Located in the heart of the old town, on the Domplatz and Residenzplatz, you couldn’t imagine a more beautiful setting for a Christmas market.

This year, the Salzburg Christmas Market is open extra long so that you can enjoy it to the full. It is open daily until January 1, 2024.

Christmas like it used to be

If you want to take a nostalgic look back, the Salzburg Christmas Museum is the place to be. This is where nostalgia and Christmas magic come together and you will even remember some things from your own childhood. A very special museum dedicated to the “Festivities between Advent and New Year from 1840-1940”.

The Salzburg Christmas Museum is located not far from the Christmas Market on Mozartplatz. It is open all year round from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and daily during the Advent season and is only closed between February 1st and mid-March.

Winter hiking in Salzburg

If you are in Salzburg at this time of year, you should not miss out on a short winter hike. The Kapuzinerberg on the right-hand side of the old town and the Mönchsberg with its fortress not only offer extensive walking trails, but also wonderful views of the city, the fortress and the surrounding countryside.

You will find the entrance to the Kapuzinerberg in Linzer Gasse, which is just a few minutes’ walk from our hotels in Salzburg. The first ascent is a little steep. Once you reach the top, however, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll.

You can get to the Mönchsberg by elevator (Museum der Moderne), by inclined elevator (fortress) or on foot. If you want to start from our Salzburg hotels, take the direct route to the Salzach and over the Müllnersteg to the Müllner church. From here you can hike the entire length of the Mönchsberg to the fortress.
