THE PLACE TO CELEBRATE

DAY TRIP TO GASTEIN FOR SKIING

Enrich your time out in Salzburg in the winter months with a day’s skiing in the Austrian Alps. From the city straight onto the slopes – a perfect combination of culture and skiing fun.

Salzburg inspires with its culture, history and urban flair – but a completely different experience awaits just over an hour away: real alpine skiing fun in the middle of the Hohe Tauern. A day trip to Gastein combines the best of both worlds – city & Alps, relaxed, sustainable and without a car.

Comfortably by train to the mountains

From Salzburg, you can reach Dorfgastein in just 65 minutes by train without having to change trains. Even the journey there is an experience: the train ride takes you through an impressive alpine landscape, past Hohenwerfen Castle, which is known to many from the world-famous film “The Sound of Music”.

A fascinating change of perspective accompanies you on this journey: From 424 meters above sea level in Salzburg, you take the train to the famous ski resort of Dorfgastein at 812 meters and continue by gondola up to 2,033 meters – right into the heart of the alpine world of the Hohe Tauern.

Arrive & get started straight away

Once you arrive at Dorfgastein train station, you can either take the ski bus to the valley station of the cable car or take a leisurely 10-minute walk.

Particularly convenient: the ski rental shop, Sport- & Modehaus Egger, is located directly in the valley station building. Here you can hire all the equipment you need, from ski trousers and skis to helmets.

You will also find the ski school on site as well as a spacious beginners’ area with a practice lift – ideal for beginners, families or anyone who wants to brush up on their technique. The ski day also ends in a relaxed manner: The valley descent leads directly back to the valley station – return your skis, change and start your relaxed journey back to Salzburg.

Skiing fun & alpine moments of pleasure

Starting at the valley station, around 80 kilometers of varied pistes open up to you – from sporty alpine to enjoyable and relaxed. Whether carving turns with panoramic views or leisurely descents: the view of the Großglockner and the surrounding peaks of the Hohe Tauern is a constant companion.

Numerous rustic ski huts invite you to stop off along the way – perfect for refreshments with regional specialties and sunny terrace moments.
