SALZBURG FOR FAMILIES

Salzburg is ideal for a short vacation with the family. The sights are easy to reach and there is a wide range of attractions to keep children entertained.

Treat yourself to some time out with your family and relax in a magical city that will captivate you all.

We have put together the best attractions for families for you. You’re guaranteed not to get bored here!

Explore Salzburg’s landmarks

Hohensalzburg Fortress towers high above the city. But don’t worry, it’s easy to get there by funicular railroad. The castle dates back to the 11th century and is one of the oldest surviving castles in Europe.

The extensive grounds, the exhibition rooms and the lovingly restored princely rooms provide a unique insight into the history of the town. Guided tours are offered regularly and there is a special audio guide for children.

There are also family-friendly public tours on offer, as well as private tours specially designed for children.

Experience the world through play

The House of Nature in Salzburg’s old town could also be called the House of Knowledge. The most diverse areas of our world are explained here in a simple and interesting way. Whether it’s the universe, the ice age or the human body – with the help of ingenious illustrations and exciting facts, you can easily find out lots of interesting facts.

Special highlights are the dinosaur hall and the

Science Center. In the Science Center, you can get hands-on and learn about the functions of electricity, energy and the power of water with simple experiments.

A centuries-old pleasure

The former pleasure palace of Archbishop Markus Sittikus is located south of Salzburg and is easy to reach by car or bus (no. 25). The beautiful Hellbrunn Palace can be visited as part of an exhibition.

The unique water games are particularly fascinating and fun for the whole family. This is where the archbishops entertained their guests and the surprising effects still delight visitors today. A newly developed audio guide leads you through the trick fountains and provides fascinating insights behind the scenes.

A spacious park around the castle invites you to stroll and take a break. You can also have a wonderful picnic here. Among other things, the park contains an adventure playground for children and a sculpture park with changing exhibitions.

Making animal friends

Salzburg Zoo is located not far from Hellbrunn Palace. Around 1,500 animals live on the 14-hectare site. These include lions and red pandas as well as native ibexes and polar wolves.

A petting zoo allows children direct contact with selected animals such as pigs, sheep, rabbits and alpacas. The animals in the petting zoo may also be fed, but only with special food that can be purchased at the ticket office.

In addition to play opportunities, there are also various photo stations and interactive puzzle and information boards. Great highlights are the climbing playground with sandpit and jako-o research stations. The virtual sticker album, for which you can collect stickers at various stations, takes you on a smartphone scavenger hunt through the zoo.

Games as far as the eye can see

Play, experience, marvel – these are the three key words of the Salzburg Toy Museum. It is located in the old town not far from the famous horse sponges. Not only can your children discover lots of fascinating toys here, they can also play.

Whether building blocks, dexterity or balancing, you can really let off steam on two levels and in different adventure worlds. Changing special exhibitions provide additional fun. This year there will be interactive exhibitions on building blocks and bricks and on outdoor games that have often been forgotten.

The puppets dance

The actors are small, but otherwise everything here is like in the big theaters and opera houses. Great productions, fascinating costumes and stage sets and many “stars”. The Salzburg Marionette Theater has been delighting visitors for over 100 years.

Mozart’s Magic Flute is performed here, as is the famous musical “The Sound of Music”. Punch and Judy shows and fairy tales are performed especially for children, as are well-known stories. There are also afternoon performances that only last an hour.
