400 years of Theater am Mirabellgarten

The Salzburg State Theater looks back on a long tradition. As early as 1625, there was a so-called “Ballhaus” on this site, where not only sporting ball games, but also festive balls and theater performances were held.

Under Prince Archbishop Colloredo, the ballroom was replaced by a “Prince Archbishop’s Court Theater” in 1775. Dramas by Friedrich Schiller were performed here, as was Mozart’s opera “The Abduction from the Seraglio”.

The current theater building was built in 1892/93 and was designed by the then well-known architect duo Fellner & Helmer. Both audiences and artists alike found the theater building particularly successful with its neo-baroque architecture.

In addition to the main stage, the theater was given a classical studio stage in October 1971 with the “Kammerspiele” in the former Mirabellcasino, which has since been used for various formats of contemporary and classical drama.

On September 27, 2025, the impressive history of the Salzburger Landestheater will be celebrated at an anniversary gala. In keeping with the theater’s concept, all art groups and all artistic and technical departments of the Salzburg State Theater will be part of this celebration.
