The world-famous movie musical “The Sound of Music”, which was filmed in 1965, celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025. A great event for Salzburg! A magical story set against a magnificent backdrop
The film “The Sound of Music” is based on the life story of Maria Augusta von Trapp (1905 – 1987), whose life took an unexpected turn when she entered the service of Baron von Trapp as a governess. The family, who had already enjoyed musical success in Salzburg, became world-famous after emigrating to the USA and performed more than 2000 concerts all over the world.
Maria Augusta von Trapp published her life story as a book in 1949. A musical based on the book was produced in the 1950s, which was a great success in New York, London and other cities.
Produced in the USA in 1965, the film “The Sound of Music” starring Julie Andrews in the role of Maria was an incredible success, particularly in America and Asia, and is still going strong today. The film, which combines love, music and drama in a wonderful story, is also a tribute to the enchanting city of Salzburg with its historic old town and numerous attractions.

Salzburg in its anniversary year
Salzburg will celebrate the 60th birthday of the classic film in 2025 with a series of special events. Here are some highlights that you should not miss.
In the Schloss Leopoldskron will host the special exhibition “Sound of Music Salzburg – Insights and Outlooks”. Numerous exhibits on the life of the Trapp family and the film can be viewed on certain dates as part of a guided tour. The exhibition is a foretaste of a Sound of Music Museum, which is due to open on the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace in 2026.
Take the anniversary year as an opportunity to visit the Salzburg Marionette Theater and experience a dazzling performance of “The Sound of Music”. Founded in 1913, the theater was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site in 2016. Over 60 lovingly crafted marionettes bring the history of the Trapp family to life.
In June and July, the park of park of Schloss Leopoldskron once again becomes the backdrop for “The Sound of Music”. An exclusive theater experience with music, scenery and picnics in the open air awaits you. From June 8 to July 9, 2025, the Salzburger Landestheater invites you to experience the story of the Trapp family in a captivating and interactive way on a total of eleven evenings.
The traditional Salzburger Heimatwerk is bringing out an “anniversary dirndl”. A special exhibition in July and August in the listed vault of the Salzburger Heimatwerk is also dedicated to “The Sound of Music”. It focuses on the themes of customs, traditional dress and costume in connection with the Hollywood film and is being created in collaboration with the Salzburg Museum.
In November and December 2025, the Salzburg State Theater the successful production of “The Sound of Music” from 2011 will be revived. Seven performances are on the program: 15/21/23 & 25.11. and 12/23 & 27.12.2025
