THE PLACE TO ENJOY
A BEER CELLAR WITH TRADITION
The
PitterKeller
in Salzburg has been delighting guests from far and wide with its rustic coziness and deliciously fresh beer for many decades. But did you know that beer was already being served here 150 years ago?
A building was erected here for the first time in the 1860s, namely Bergerbräuer’s beer hall. In the course of the construction of the Western Railway line and Salzburg Central Station, there was a veritable building boom on the right bank of the Salzach.
Initially, the beer hall with its taproom and catering rooms was dedicated entirely to the enjoyment of beer, but by the end of the 19th century the building was increasingly transformed into an accommodation facility, the Hotel Pitter, due to the rise in tourism.
But even after several conversions and additions, they were still aware of their roots and in 1911 they built the so-called “Volkskeller” on the mezzanine floor and the “Paracelsusstüberl” in the cellar.
It is not known exactly when the little room in the cellar became the “PitterKeller”. However, the black and white photograph from 1826 already shows the staff of the PitterKeller in festive costume.
To this day, gastronomy and beer enjoyment are an integral part of the hotel in Rainerstraße. Tradition also has its place in the newly renovated IMLAUER Hotel Pitter Salzburg and complements the modern overall picture wonderfully.
